The teaching of IsiXhosa at SACS is based on the belief that the learners need to develop an awareness and appreciation of the language as a communication tool. Through the teaching of grammar and vocabulary skills (useful phrases), the learners are required to acquire the basic building blocks of the language that will allow them to read, write and speak IsiXhosa. Lessons are presented in a fun-filled environment. Learners are encouraged to use the language in authentic situations, such as exchanging greetings, enquiring about health and shopping experiences. Project work is also assigned in each Phase as a means of allowing the learners to become more familiar with important aspects of culture and traditional practices.
