SACS JUNIOR SCHOOL

ENVIRONMENTAL CLUB

The Environmental Club aims to create an awareness of various environmental issues affecting our society.  During term 1 of 2007 the boys engaged in the following activities.

The boys attended a paper making workshop at the Montebello Craft Centre in Newlands whereby alien river vegetation is used to make paper. Boys were engaged in an interesting hour long workshop where they produced two sheets of paper. It was extremely interesting for them to see the entire process as well as assist with clearing alien vegetation from our choking rivers.

BRING YOUR PET TO SCHOOL DAY

pet

Yes.. at SACS we brought our "PET" to school. It was however, not the four legged kind but our PET 1 plastic bottles.

As part of our ongoing recycling campaign, boys were asked to collect PET 1 bottles and bring it to school.

It was the final recycling competition for the year and in true SACS style, everyone pulled together and collected thousands of PET bottles. Well done to all the classes.

SACS Meets the Can Man!!

Sacs Junior has embarked on a huge recycling drive. Since the opening of it's depot in February this year, the recycling team have been hard at work creating an environmental awareness at the school. Parents constructed a 5m high "Can Man " on the playground and the boys were asked to guess how many cans were used to construct the "Can Man".

On Wednesday 4 June, the Collect -A -Can's can  man visited the school to award prizes to all the winners in each class. There was lots of excitement as it was also the first time that the boys were allowed to use their Parmalat sponsored Recycling Bags!  A huge thanks to Parmalat and Collect - A- Can for helping us at SACS to create a cleaner environment.

Our aim is to Reuse, Reduce and Recycle!

SACS Recycling Workshop for Cleaning and Ground Staff

On 10 July 2008,  SACS Junior School held a two hour workshop on recycling for the ground and cleaning staff. It was a fun filled, hands on event initiated by the school’s environmental educator, Ms Lynne Roscoe.

The purpose of the workshop was to inform and empower the workers about the importance of recycling and their role in the school’s waste programme. The workshop took the form of an interesting power point presentation by the SACS PTA recycling co ordinator, Mrs Lael Rothenburg and a video presentation by Mr Roddrick Resandt of Collect A Can.

The workshop covered the following areas:

  • What recycling is
  •  How and why we recycle
  •  The present recycling initiatives that the school is engaged in
  •   What happens to the cans once they leave the depot.

The discussions focused primarily on paper, plastic and can recycling.

The presentations were followed by a short group activity and a quiz where there were great prizes to be won. These prizes were kindly sponsored by Collect A Can. Thereafter, a short lunch followed. The workshop ended with the presentation of certificates of participation for each participant.

A huge thanks goes to Collect A Can for sponsoring the prizes and delivering a very informative presentation. Your contribution to our programme and continued support is appreciated.

Button Project

The Enviro club participated in a project using old buttons. Parents were requested to send old buttons to school and the response was great. The boys enthusiastically sorted through the buttons choosing their favourite colours and shape. The result was a range of items that included necklaces, bracelets, keyrings, wall hangings and button curtains. The necklaces were very popular and boys were very keen to make them and use them as gifts for their moms. Pictured here are groups of Enviro Club members making necklaces for their moms.

Club Card

The Enviro club asked teachers to collect scrap pieces of colourful card. These pieces of scrap card were used to make gift cards using tea bag folding. The method was demonstrated to the boys and they spent the entire afternoon creating an array of colourful gift cards. The boys were very excited and experimented with a range of cards. Pictured here boys are folding scrap pieces of card to create bright cards.

Interclass Bin Competition

In keeping with the focus for 2008, all classes were issued with a used chemical container which was to be transformed into a paper bin. An inter grade competition was held whereby classes utilized all their creative energy to transform these containers. A range of excellent ideas emerged, from Coke cans to paper monsters. The quality of work was outstanding. Pictured here are interesting designs from the various grades.

Green Day

The SACS recycling programme was launched on Green Day. Prior this day, various speakers addressed the assembly informing the learners of the importance of recycling and the impact waste has on our environment locally and globally. Boys were then requested to collect their recyclables for 2 weeks and bring it to school on Green Day. Judging by the overwhelming response on that day, the boys certainly listened well to the messages in assembly and took it to heart. Parents, teachers, ground staff and learners were all up bright and early to assist at the newly established Recycling Depot. Pictured here are many of the helpers and people who supported the initiative on that day.
