SACS boasts a well-resourced and extremely busy music department with four full-time and three part-time teachers. Music plays a major role in the life of the school with more than 200 boys learning to play an instrument - nearly one third of the school enrolment! We have a Junior, Senior and Chamber Choir and a Junior, Concert and Jazz Band.
Members of the music staff are as follows:

The Foundation Phase Music Development Programme runs from Gr.1-3. During Class Music lessons boys are observed and those that show an aptitude are tested individually. Boys who have applied for lessons are also tested. Those who are accepted are taught recorder in groups of four or five once a week. They continue in groups until the end of Gr.3. This programme gives the boys an opportunity to discover if playing an instrument is something they would like to invest time and effort in. At the end of their Gr.3 year, we encourage pupils who have shown diligent application and progress to move on to another instrument in Gr.4. Fees for group lessons are R250 per term and are debited to your school fee account. Individual piano lessons are offered to suitable applicants from Gr.3 onwards. |
From Gr.4 onwards, the pupils who are accepted into the instrumental programme will have individual lessons once a week. Theory instruction is included in these lessons. Within a term the wind players will play in the Junior Band that practises on Monday, Thursday and Friday mornings in the Auditorium. Thereafter they will be promoted to the Concert Band that rehearses in the Band Room on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Musicians chosen for the Jazz Band rehearse on Tuesdays and Fridays. All rehearsals are from 07:35 – 08:10. Termly fees are currently R600 for individual tuition, with a band levy of R100 (when applicable) and instrument hire at R350. Please note that one term’s notice is required to discontinue lessons.
All boys in Gr.2 and 3 are auditioned for placement in the Junior Choir at the start of each year. Gr.1’s are auditioned in the third term. All Gr.4’s are tested for placement in the Senior or Chamber Choirs. Junior Choir rehearsals are on a Monday and Wednesday from 07:45 to 08:15. Chamber and Senior Choir practices during the SURE period on a Tuesday and Thursday from 10:10 to 10:40. The Chamber Choir also rehearses on a Tuesday morning from 07:35 to 08:10.
